What Do You Think You Cannot Do?

You Must Do the Thing You Think You Cannot Do

I’ve kept the quote by Eleanor Roosevelt “You Must Do the Thing You Think You Cannot Do” in front of me for almost three decades now as it serves as a reminder to press onward when I start to feel that inward recoil from a decision I know is just based on fear.

I realized a long time ago that the ‘thing’ that made me queasy with dread was indeed the very thing I needed to do. After all, that’s how we stretch ourselves and how we grow. From moving to a city where I knew no one, to opening a business with no resources – I’ve learned that when I experience that mental cringe – that is precisely when I have to power through … and I’ve always been happy that I did!

Starting A Business? This Should Inspire You. (Written in 2013 when I just started our business)

One year ago I ventured out into the world of business ownership. I didn’t know what I was doing, or how I was going to do it because I had no prior entrepreneurial experience. Don’t laugh, but I had to look up how to spell entrepreneur! (I so wish I was joking. And hey, don’t judge – it wasn’t a word I needed to use when working for somebody else!) Anyway, It’s fair to say I really didn’t know what I was in for or what to expect. It didn’t matter if I was making my first sales call, following up with someone I was convinced would never hire me, or introducing myself to yet another networking group – I made it a practice of acknowledging that feeling for what it was – simply fear; and the best way to abate fear is to walk straight into it. If you’ve ever been to a Tony Robbins’ UPW (Unleash the Power Within) you will likely remember his powerful example of dancing with fear instead of fighting it and how in that action you release its hold on you. And that’s exactly what I did – I danced with fear again, and again, and again. But here’s the moral of the story – I triumphed again, and again, and again. I’ve found Eleanor’s quote to be a profound truth and I challenge you, in the same way, I challenged myself one year ago. Step up to fear, step out in faith.
